When looking at my main focus of my magazine, straight away
I felt that it would work best in a larger magazine publishing company for it
to actually appeal and reach the large audience it targets. Through research on
companies I decided that the company I feel it would work best with would be
BAUER. I chose this company because they own both kerrang and Q which I feel
both have aspects similar to my magazine. The similarities are that kerrang
covers the same sort of vibe however Q covers quite a large area of target
audience.
On second thoughts, I did change my mind
about investing my magazine with a larger publisher. I felt that this would
give my magazine a very big opportunity; however it may change the main idea of
the magazine which is why I have decided against joining up with a larger
company. As the main idea for the magazine was to have raw talent which is
unedited and almost straight from the artist’s homes, I feel that joining up
with a large company will defeat the object of this and may actually change the
artists and how they produce their music. This is the concept that I definitely
didn’t want.
This is why I feel that the magazine would be best going
with a self-publishing music magazine such as Clash, as they only produce the
one magazine, but target a large audience and actually are very popular in the
fact that they are more successful that Nme.
Research actually shows that the age group buying the most
music online and in stores is the 45+ This may come as a surprise, but that’s
just because the most illegally down loaded music comes from the younger aged
groups or perhaps can afford to buy music online. I feel that eventually my
magazine could appear in stores such as Asda and WHSmith as I feel that the age
group that would be buying the magazine and is targeted towards would use my
magazine as a way of escaping from their work. I imagine my magazine however;
to be sold in more urban stores which link in with the overall feel of the
magazine, but it would achieve high sales if it were to be sold in larger
branded stores. I also feel that with the free give away parts within the
magazine, that this particular age group would be further convinced into the
purchase of it, as they have been statistically proven to do the most illegal
downloads to get the music. This is where id link my magazine with itunes to
give the reader certain details if they were to purchase or subscribe to the
magazine. This would also help to cut down on the illegal downloads and to
increase on magazine sales.
I considered making my magazine so that it was out to rely
on income from advertising (like the fly) but I felt that if I was to do this
it would have to connect with a larger company in some way for it to have a
larger income from advertisement. This would result in the change of the
artists in the content of the magazine, something I don’t want to consider.
The idea of having an
online magazine version would work best in the way that if you subscribe to the
magazine, you could perhaps get a special code allowing you to see even more
exclusive stuff online. This would insure that the magazines were actually sold
and the information wasn’t just all found online for free without any sales of
magazines being committed.
Perhaps a smaller online radio station could be produced
where readers could rate and put forward their music choices and ideas to be
discussed. This again, links in with the way of connecting with the readers.
A distributor that I feel would link with this is Front Line
as is the UK’s leading magazine and Distribution Company. I feel that this
would allow my magazine to reach a large audience. Front line also link in with
bauer, which is a publisher which I had previously considered.
Over all I feel that a smaller company would work best with
my magazine and smaller online exclusive pieces would be what makes the
magazine have a larger popularity and sell best. I think with what my magazine
allows the media to receive; RAW magazine could be very successful.
