How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The main idea for the magazine ‘RAW’ which I have created was to appeal to both male and females. It represents people of the age of 16 to 25. The magazine would acts almost like a ‘students’ magazine. The magazine is created to show off raw up and coming artists which have not yet been edited by the music companies and industry.

This age range means that my target audience falls in to the category of YUPPIE’s (Young, Upwardly-mobile professional) or even YAKS (Young, Adventurous, Keen and Single). The articles within my magazine are based on up and coming RAW talent and most students are interest in this area and finding out new bands to find interest in.
A lot of people around this age and genre of music seem to have a big interest in gigs and festivals. This is where the information and content of my magazine falls in and draws their attention. This would result in bigger sales, which of course, means more money for the magazine in general. By giving away things like gig tickets or competitions this also enhances this.
As students are typically known to not have much money, my magazine is a reasonable price. I didn’t want it to be too cheap but I wanted it to feel affordable for the particular target audience.

This issue of the magazine is made to cater to both sexes. I did this by not using a colour scheme which attracts one gender more. I also insured to use both a male and a female as my main images, to attract both sexes straight from the browsing stage. I also used what I learnt from my research as the content of my magazine. For example, I used the females likes and the males likes and insured to put a 50/50 split between both sexes.
The image used on my front cover was chosen and taken in a way to attract males in the way that she’s looking in a serious, but almost seductive way to the camera. The image also attracts the females in a way that she’s quite attractive and nice to look at, meaning females would want to look like her and be her.

The contents page of a male links to both sexes, in a way that its in depth and looking into the camera. This makes the whole piece feel more personal to the reader.
I feel that my magazine represents people of certain styles. I tried to base the over all piece in a way that it was interesting to a wide area of people. I did this by including a wide variety within the content.
I feel that my magazine does mostly target indie/scensters however, as my research carried out shows that this is the most popular group that is around in this particular age group.
