How did you attract/address your audience?

The age group of which I have chosen to base the magazine around is ages 16 to 25. I have made the magazine to appeal to this age range by the language of the articles, the content of the magazine and also the magazines layouts. By following the results from my questionnaire, I was able to base my magazine around this specific target audience. The price range of the magazine must be affordable as students are typically knows to not have much money. However, I don’t want the magazine to look or have a cheap feel to it so I shall have a fine line between cheap and expensive. The language of the magazine articles were written in a way that felt informal and easy to read. I chose this because I felt students would want to have a relaxing read as a break or a getaway form the student work life. I did this by giving the articles a ‘typical magazine reporter vibe’ but in a way that it felt more casual and not harsh. By doing so, I feel that the reader would connect more to their favourite band/artist that they're reading about and feel that they're more on their level. This would be a key way of improving sales. The content of the magazine connects to this particular age group by focusing it around the research that I completed before the making. For example, I found out the likes and dislikes for this particular group of people. I then included these within the magazine insuring to leave out the dislikes too as this would be a waste of money to include something that they wouldn’t be interested in. I also insured to work around stereotypes of this age range by showing things within the magazine that perhaps the ‘typical 18 year old’ isn't supposed to be interested in, but research shows is. The research carried out within the magazine showed that this age group liked a mixture of magazine images and text. I insured to include both of these within the magazine so that both aspects were covered. By including posters to the magazine you’re adding almost a ‘freebee’ which would raise the sales. I insured to include an in depth article WITH images so that the readers get small selections of what they like. Therefore the magazine covers a wider range of people of this age range. Appealing to both genders The gender that the magazine is targeting is both male and female. I based the magazine around this as I didn't feel that there was a music magazine out there which was a 50/50 split between both genders. The language of the magazine was written in a way that targeted both genders For example I didn’t want to talk too much about certain things which base around genders. To take this example further, if I was talking about something which was typically researched to be preferred by boys, female readers would lose interest, and vice versa. The content of the magazine was based in a way to focus on both genders but also to create a magazine that had something which others didn’t. There isn’t a music magazine out there that im aware of, which has a mixture of both music and fashion which isn’t only band merch but also affordable high street clothing. I chose this mixture of topics as the research that I carried out proved that they were the most popular for both male and female. I insured to base around different types of fashion for both genders in a way that a large selection of people would be interested. Another key importance of the pages I have created are the way that ive captured images in these pages of both male and female. I felt this would be an instant appeal to both genders as the image is the main focal point in most magazine pages The layout and colours used within my magazine were selected to insure they didn’t discriminate a particular gender or focus on a certain area too much. I chose black white and yellow as I felt they were equal colours for both sexes and I felt that they worked really well together. By doing this anyone browsing the magazine, what ever gender could have some sort of interest. The browsing stage is almost the most important stage of the selling process as the attraction as to be there for the reader to be interested in the product.

For an example. These images used in my magazine are both of males and females appearing to look serious. This contrasts with the typical stereotype of late teens being immature and not grown up yet. The images suggest otherwise and add a more personal feel to the magazines overall image. The shots being very close and personal add to this and I feel that the difference in light and dark lighting of the two photos show both sides of a late teen early adults rocky mood changing life. I also insured to use people in the images that reflected late teenagers in their postures facial expressions and general style. I insured to keep the hair the main focal point in both images so that there wasn’t a certain fashion statement being shown. This is to avoid attracting only certain groups of people and to target a larger range of styles. An example of an image similar to the ones used within my music magazine is below.

This images used on the double page spread in no way suggests its typically based around one gender. An example of a magazine double page spread that appeals to one gender more than others is below. I feel this has a bigger appeal more to femals as the colour choice of the page is more guided towards girls. The main image is a female and even the language of the oage hints towards this.
Appealing to music tastes The music that I chose to be in the magazine focuses on indie, rock, dubstep and techno pop. I chose this area as my research showed that my age group selected would be mostly interested in this area. The language used within the magazines music articles were written from the artists perspectives. I feel that this makes them feel more personal and also exclusive to the magazine. It also makes the artist feel more ‘normal’ and a stranger connection between the reader and their favourite artist can happen. By showing an equal mix between the above genres of music a larger amount of people should be interested in the overall product. I didn’t chose to include other music genres as not a very large percentage of my research showed interest for this and I didn’t feel it would make that big of an impact on sales. The way of capturing these genres of music within my magazine seem to have worked really well. The content included within the contents page numbers are equally ranging between these music genres. I also used certain graphics, as these genres of music fit together, the typical style of the pages and patterns of the backgrounds (mainly on my double page spread) seem to fit in really well. The retro quirky feel added capture all aspects of the music. An example of appealing to different music tastes is below. This is an image of a front cover from nme music magazine. The cover image shows a range of music types. The main cover appeals to both sexes and music types in the way that it doesn’t use anything stereotypical, its all raw designs. This is similar to what ive tried to capture with my magazine. I've tried to use graphics within my title that appeal to sexes and all music tastes by not using anything that suggests certain styles more than others. I feel this works well, mainly in black and white because its not stereotypical at all. For example, If I used a pink title, stereo typically it would appeal to everyone.

  1. This is a fair answer. It could be developed by giving specific examples of you language use in the DPS. Also you could conclude by exploring what sort of implied relationship the magazine has with the reader. Best friend? Slightly cooler, older perr to look up to? Industry insider expert?
