Audience Research For College Magazine

To find out which content to put into the magazine that I will be creating, research had to take place. To research into this I chose to create and carry out a questionnaire which gave me an idea of what people would like to see within my magazine. I insured to ask an equal amount of male and females to make sure that the results were reliable and suitable for all audiences.
My results showed that most boys wanted to know about sporting curricular activities within the college and the majority of girls wanted to know about the meals sold within the college and also gossip about event within the college. The average amount that people were willing to pay was around 50p, but a small ratio of people also wished for the magazine to be free. Nobody wished to subscribe to the magazine.
When researching into what magazines people currently brought the questionnaire results showed that boys either didn't buy magazines or enjoyed reading sporting magazines. On the other hand, the majority of girls did buy magazines and on average they were mostly gossip and fashion related.
Both male and females both stated that they would be interested more if the magazine was informal and if it was released monthly. The majority of people said that they'd prefer more pictures to text.
I gathered information on what the last thing that people bought was so that I could have ideas on what to put into my magazine to attract the reader. The majority said they'd brought clothes, which also links to the majority vote that females mostly shopped in their spare time and males mostly played sport. A few people were also interested in music and gossip, a small quantity also would like to see competitions within the magazine. This all gave me an idea of what to put into the content of my magazine.
If I were to carry out my research again I'd chose to ask questions to a wider range of people to insure that my results were more valid and reliable. I'd also change my questions slightly and possibly ask what subjects the students were taking at college. I could then base the magazines slightly more to the subjects which have a wider amount of students to insure it was fitted to the target audience properly and would get the highest sales possible.
In the end some questions possibly werent needed that much and didn't give much input towards the content of the magazine. If I could do this research again I'd ask a wider range of questions about things out of college to cover more areas and topics, therefore, covering a wider range of people.
The main difference i found between genders is that females were more willing to buy magazines. This is possibly because there aren't enough male based magazines out there, or they just aren't interested in magazines in general. This could mean 2 things; either i could make the college magazine 60/40 male based to attract more males to buy the magazine, Or id make it more female based to insure the sales are high. Further research would have to be carried forward to come to a conclusion for this.
